Taking Education from Good to Great | Houston Christian High School | Memorial Village Moms

By Marc Ferruzzo

This past year, my wife and I decided to take our son’s education from good to great. We are residents of Katy and our oldest son, Hunter, was a rising junior at one of the large public high schools. He performed well academically, played sports, and had lots of friends, but my wife and I could tell he wasn’t thriving. He simply didn’t feel known or wanted at school. With a class of 1,000 students, my son was just a number.

That’s when a friend of ours invited us to tour Houston Christian High School. We had no intention of switching to a private school, but when we stepped foot on campus, we were hooked. Everyone, from the football coach to the front office staff, spoke about the development of the whole student, including supporting a healthy walk of faith. They spoke how success isn’t measured in wins and losses, but through the development of high moral character. Things like sports championships follow those who make ethical choices.

The decision to switch my son to a different high school after his sophomore year was difficult. He would be away from some lifelong friends, but he wanted to be more than just a number. We talked it over as a family and decided it was the best move for him to apply to Houston Christian. It has been the best decision we have ever made. My son is thriving at his new school. His grades are outstanding, he plays three sports, and he’s joined many clubs and organizations on campus. To his and my great delight, he was named captain of the football team and a member of the Homecoming court. His confidence has never been so high. He feels great about himself. I have never seen him so happy.

The experience is going so well that my daughter, Taylor, decided to attend Houston Christian. She is currently a straight-A student, freshman cheerleader, and on the school’s swim team. She has never been happier. Our youngest, a seventh-grader, is now eagerly anticipating his years at Houston Christian.

Parents, I encourage you to sit down with your children and figure out as a family what is best for them. Some kids thrive in a bigger school while others get lost in that environment. If your child does not want to be just a number, I would recommend Houston Christian. The people we have met and the staff and faculty employed there are incredible. If you are wanting your child to be a part of something bigger than themselves, Houston Christian is perfect.
